A textbook Baroque garden
With its large, decorative curls, symmetrical shapes, extensive embroidery-like parterres and clipped box hedges, this is unmistakeably a Baroque garden. This garden was inspired by the world-famous book ‘Den Neerlandtsen hovenier’ (‘The Dutch Gardener’) by Jan van der Groen, which dates from 1670. Like any true Baroque garden, the various elements are mirrored precisely on either side of an imaginary axis. This runs from the summer house to the museum’s former entrance gate. The closely clipped hedges give the garden a suitably enclosed feel. In 1659 Jan van der Groen was the gardener of Prince William III. His authoritative gardening manual has been frequently reprinted and translated over the years and is still regularly consulted today.
