In days gone by a rope yard would employ what were known as “wheel spinners”, boys of around 10 years old who would spin the rope-maker’s wheel to twist strands of yarn together to make rope. One such “wheel spinner” was Michiel de Ruyter, who went on to achieve fame as an admiral in the Dutch navy.
Over the years the rope yard itself also underwent many changes and developments. Come and see our rope-maker and learn all about different types of rope.
