Wayside chapel
A place of worship, joy and sorrow.
An answered prayer, a lightning strike, an accident or a recovery from ill health – these are all reasons why a person may have decided to build a wayside chapel. There are many such chapels in South Limburg, usually at a crossroads outside a village or on a hill, but sometimes simply at the side of the street or in a field. The oldest chapels date from the 15th century. This one stood at the intersection of the Eykerweg and Heiligerweg near Margraten from the end of the 18th century. It was made of marl, which is not surprising, as there was a marl quarry in the area. Wayside chapels like this were often maintained by local residents. For the Corpus Christi procession it was lavishly decorated with flowers, sand patterns and flags, At other times of the year more simple decorations were used.
