Weighbridge
How do you weigh a load of sugar beet?
At the end of the 19th century farmers from Wolphaartsdijk founded the weighbridge association De Eendracht. They ordered their weighbridge from the company Massee & Zn. Until 1966 farmers brought their harvested crops, such as sugar beet, potatoes and onions, here for weighing. The fully laden cart was driven onto the weighbridge and weighed. Once the goods had been unloaded, the empty cart was weighed again on the way back. The difference between these figures, the weight of the load, was indicated on a weigh slip, which the farmer then used to receive payment. The weighbridge was operated from the weigh-house. Originally, this weighbridge could weigh loads of up to 5,000 kilos, but this was increased to 10,000 kilos following its renovation in 1931.
