Prefab home donated by Norway
The flood disaster of 1953 has a happy ending for Truus.
Although Zeeland was worst hit by the flood disaster of 1953, the effects were also felt inland. Even the Luijbrechts family, living as far inland as Raamsdonksveer, lost their home on that fateful night of 31 January/1 February. Following the flood, the homeless family spent the first year in emergency accommodation. In total, the Netherlands was given more than 900 prefab homes by various countries. Norway alone provided 326 of these, one of which became home to the Luijbrechts family. It was a delightful wooden house, complete with insulation, double-glazing and a shower. After all the fear and trauma, for 5-year-old Truus it was a gift from heaven. The family lived here very happily for many years. Now the period after the disaster has been brought to life inside the building through the eyes of Truus and her family.
