Tram depot
A bad day in 1944 changes public transport today.
The fact that trolleybuses now operate in Arnhem rather than trams can be traced back to the events of 18 September 1944. On this day, during the Battle of Arnhem, the tram depot, trams and many of the overhead wires were destroyed by the fighting and shellfire. The depot was never repaired. Over 50 years later, however, part of it was reconstructed here at the museum, complete with its striking façade and cast-iron windows. The reconstruction was based on old photos and the memories of former employees, as the original construction drawings could not be found. This reconstructed depot is roughly a sixth of the size of the original building and is used to store the trams that now run through the museum park.
