Tower mill
A tall mill to catch the wind.
This mill towered over everything around it – and with good reason, as this kind of mill (known as a tower mill) was designed to stand between buildings and houses. To catch the wind, it therefore needed to extend well above the rooftops. This mill ground grain for bakers in Delft for more than 200 years. It had many different owners over the course of its long history, often two at a time (which was not unusual, as mills were expensive). This wind flour mill initially bore the name De Slickmolen, but in 1807 Dirk Apon became the owner and decided to rename it Het Fortuin. In 1883 the mill got new neighbours: an oil manufacturing company by the name of FranschHollandsche Oliefabrieken Calvé. The company grew rapidly and in 1917 Het Fortuin had to make way to allow the business to expand.
