Rietveld holiday chalet
A holiday home for eight measuring just 33 square.
This holiday chalet was designed by renowned architect Gerrit Rietveld. The floor area measures just 33 m2 yet, by cleverly dividing up the space, Rietveld was able to create room for eight people to stay here, as well as fitting in a kitchen and toilet. All that is missing is a shower. Until the 1980s six of these little chalets stood on the Hessenheem family campsite in Markelo. They were built specifically for staff from the Albatros superphosphate factory in Pernis and the De Vries Robbé metal construction company in Gorinchem, allowing them to enjoy a healthy holiday. Rietveld also designed the interior, which included a variant of his famous crate chair from 1934. Latterly, the chalets were only rarely rented out. Nowadays, holidaymakers are looking for more comfort and more and more people are taking their holidays abroad.
