Poffertjes stall
Eating ‘poffertjes’ is the height of sophistication.
‘They don’t make them like that any more’ is certainly true of this transportable ‘poffertjes’ stall (‘poffertjes’ are tiny sweet pancakes). It is one of the last remaining old-fashioned ‘poffertjes’ stalls in the Netherlands. The nostalgic murals and intimate booths with little curtains conjure up sweet memories of days gone by. Every summer for forty years you would come across this stall in Epe. The owner, J. van der Schoot, baked ‘poffertjes’, fritters and waffles throughout this period. In the mid-19th century ‘poffertjes’ stalls came to be seen as a rather luxurious meeting place for more sophisticated visitors to a fair, offering baked goods, music and even strong drink. They continued to attract more well-to-do customers in particular into the 1930s. ‘Ordinary folk’ would buy their snacks from a simpler stall selling griddle cakes and doughnut balls.
