Timber store
Wood dries quickest if the air can flow around it
For many years this timber store stood in the yard of the Peltenburg company – a timberyard and shipbuilder’s situated on Zomervaart in Haarlem. The sides of the shed are open so the air could flow around to dry the freshly cut wood. Sometimes this took years. Full-scale drawings of ship components were produced in the loft and there were models of ships on the walls from which customers could make their choice. In 1918, the year in which the First World War came to an end, Peltenburg stopped building ships. It then started using the loft as a timber store too. Before it could do so, however, the supporting joists in the loft had to be strengthened. The 1960s saw the store fall into disuse, but since it was moved here in 1971 it has been used as a store once again. The loft is open to visitors.
