Best room
The most beautiful knick-knacks from around the globe.
In around 1600 mariners from Hindeloopen started transporting goods to and from Scandinavia and the Baltic countries for ship owners in Amsterdam and the Zaan region. They were therefore regular visitors to Amsterdam, where they purchased objects that had been brought back by the Dutch East India Company: Chinese and Japanese porcelain, printed cotton fabric known as ‘chintz’ and luxury goods. Many of these were put on display in their ‘best room’ – a room that could be found in every prosperous Hindeloopen household. At the end of the 18th century Hindeloopen’s prosperity came to an end and these ‘best rooms’ disappeared. In around 1850, however, people began to show renewed interest in these rooms. In 1889 the ‘Hindeloopen room’ was presented at the world fair in Paris as a hallmark of Dutch identity.
Reconstructed here in 1923. Interior: 18th century.
