Printing press
One letter at a time and back to front.
Quickly printing out a document with a computer and printer is child’s play. However, computers and printers have not been around all that long. How did people print texts before the printer was invented? That’s what you will find out inside: you will see how texts were built up one letter at a time and back to front, a task that required a great deal of patience. This is actually the exact same system that Johannes Gutenberg developed in around 1450. If the printer is in the building, you can also try your hand at printing yourself. For a long time it was claimed that Laurens Janszoon Coster of Haarlem invented the printing process, but that is almost certainly not the case. There are even doubts about whether Laurens Coster actually existed. Our printing works is housed in the former dressing room of the Open Air Museum’s open air theatre.
