Farmhouse
From two chickens and a goat to a farm.
For small-scale farmers, cultivating a decent harvest from their little plot of land on the poor, sandy soils of the Veluwe region was quite a task. They therefore mainly supported themselves by working as day labourers at bigger farms in the area. At home there would be a few chickens scratching around and perhaps one or two goats. The droppings and dung from these animals were used to improve the soil, in the hope that each harvest would be a little better than the last. If things went well, after a few years the chickens and goat would be joined by a cow and possibly even a few pigs. These produced even more dung, which meant the soil could be improved further. That was how, little by little, a small farm like this was created. However, the whole family had to get stuck in to keep their heads above water.
