Farmhouse
A good life in the Tielerwaard polder.
In 1646 Hendrik de Joode had this charming farmhouse built in Varik. At the back the roof overhangs the façade slightly and contains a hatch – a clever design that allowed hay carts to be positioned under the floor of the hay loft. The hay could then be moved up easily into the loft. This mixed farm on the fertile clay soils of the Betuwe region delivered excellent yields and the occupants made a good living from it. You can see this from the luxurious ‘best room’, for example. They also ate and drank extremely well. In the kitchen the farmer’s wife explains how food was prepared and preserved in the early 20th century. If you look carefully, you can still see signs of the many alterations that were made to the farmhouse over the centuries.
