Workers’ houses
A journey through time via four Tilburg houses.
Step through the front door of the house on the left and you will find yourself in 1860. Hygiene was poor at this time and epidemics were commonplace – the well used for drinking water was right next to the dung heap and the privy. As you wander through the other houses, you will see how living conditions and hygiene developed over the next 110 years. The second house focuses on the high infant mortality rate in Tilburg in around 1910. This was traced back to feeding bottles with rubber tubes and teats, which were difficult to clean. After passing through the smart 1950s interior of the third house, that features a modern kitchen unit and composite stone worktop, you enter the 1970s. This was not only the decade of macramé and orange, but above all one that saw ongoing improvements in maternity care.
