Children’s Activity Farmyard
Come and play, dig and learn at our farmyard created specifically for children! The completely revamped Children’s Activity Farmyard opened on 28 April. Here, children can explore the cycle of farming life: from poop to plant. A day packed with nature, fun and wonder awaits. Come along and experience it for yourself!
Meet Wiep the Worm in the worm hotel
Get to know Wiep the Worm, the hero of the soil. In his worm hotel, children will discover how leftover fruit and vegetables are transformed into nutritious compost. It’s a fascinating insight into the world teeming with life beneath our feet. Slide open the hatch and take a look at what’s living in the ground.
From milking cows to digging in the vegetable garden
At the Children’s Activity Farmyard, you can have a go at all kinds of jobs yourself, from milking a cow, feeding the chickens and watering the plants through to digging the soil. You will also learn how chicken poop helps plants grow and how important manure is for fertile soil. Step by step you will find out about the cycle of nature and see how everything is connected. By playing at being a real farmer, you will learn by doing. Experience farming life first-hand!
Tip! Did you know there’s lots more for children to do at the museum?
Play, craft and imagine
Stories from the farm are brought to life in the puppet theatre. Children can make their own sock puppet and invent their own story. Perhaps they will make a curious farmyard worm wearing a straw hat or a science worm with a moustache and glasses? The character and story are up to them! They can also create art on the washing line using items of clothing, inspired by the artist Helga Stentzel. It’s a chance to let their creativity run free!
Learn about sustainability and the cycle of life
The Children’s Activity Farmyard is about more than just having fun. Through play, children will learn about the cycle of life and why everything in nature is connected. This will stimulate their curiosity and increase their awareness of sustainability, nutrition and nature. Now more than ever it is essential that the younger generation learns how valuable nature is, and that we need to take good care of it. By getting close to the soil, children develop respect for everything that lives and grows – an important foundation for the future.
