Adventure for the Whole Family
A day at the Open Air Museum with your children is one big adventure. Travel back in time and experience how people lived and worked in the past. It’s a nostalgic delight for adults and a fun, educational day for kids.
Discover, play, taste, and experience: take a ride on a real vintage tram, stroll past the farms and animals, play games in the Canon of the Netherlands, and enjoy delicious warm poffertjes and hot chocolate with whipped cream.
Activities for children
Every day, the museum hosts a variety of activities that are fun for children. Celebrate on the Children’s Farm and learn about the different festivals celebrated in the Netherlands. Want to get hands-on? Make your own marigold salve, or join the GPS treasure hunt and explore the museum as it was during World War II.
Children also love the playground next to Herberg de Hanekamp, the historic trams that run all day through the park, and the Zaanse Square. The shipwrights will show you how a boat is built.

Experience the museum after hours with Uitgelicht..
..and stumble upon hidden memories, untold stories, and… a mysterious intruder
During the new edition of Uitgelicht, the voice of the Night Watchman will guide you on his evening rounds through the museum park. He will take you to places that might go unnoticed during the day but come alive at night!
He will explore the park and lead you along atmospherically lit buildings and wooded paths. Along the way, he shares stories about forgotten residents, old customs, and both small and major events that took place in the houses, mills, and farms. Stories of how people lived with nature, fought against it, or followed its rhythms.
From October 10 to 26, you can enjoy the light walk every evening. Be sure to book a time slot. The light walk is suitable for all ages.

Canon of the Netherlands
Is the weather rainy during your visit? You can still have plenty of fun in the large Canon of the Netherlands exhibition. Here, you'll find amazing "film sets" that flow into one another, telling stories from the Canon across ten historical periods. You're face to face with historical figures from every era.
You'll meet historical figures from each period and get to know their world through games, animation, and films. You'll also see the objects they used, preserved evidence of their stories.

About the Open Air Museum
Wander among historical buildings and chat with artisans. In the museum, you’ll find buildings, objects, and stories that are up to two hundred years old, but also memories from your own childhood. Reflect on the major events in our history, as well as the ‘small’ moments of everyday life.
You’ll discover that people in the past faced many of the same questions and challenges we do today. In this museum, you’ll explore your own roots and the stories of others, while reflecting on where we are headed.
