At the Radmakerij in ’t Woold, wooden wheels are still made by hand. But a wheel isn’t truly finished until the iron hoop is fitted around it. This happens during the hoop-bending process: the hoop is heated over an open fire, placed around the wheel while still hot, and then immediately cooled with water. Because the hoop is slightly smaller than the wheel, it tightens around the wood as it cools. It’s a tense moment, because only then is it clear whether the wheel has been made properly.
During this demonstration, you can see two large wooden wheels made for a Malle-jan, a forest cart used to haul logs out of the woods. Because the logs hang below the axle, the wheels need to be extra large: these have a diameter of no less than 1.80 meters.
Come see how this unique craft is done on September 19 between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The demonstration will take place next to the blacksmith shop and will only be held in dry weather.
