Come watch wool dyeing!
Dyeing wool is just like cooking: you follow a recipe and have a vision of the end result, but the final color and its intensity surprise you every time.
Using herbs from our own herb garden, the wool dyers dye the wool from the museum’s sheep. They pick the herbs themselves and carefully process them into beautiful natural colors.
By varying the herbs and the boiling method, new shades are created time and again. After the dyeing process, the wool is washed and carefully hung to dry. Step by step, a handful of herbs is transformed into a unique piece of colored wool.
Curious about how this special craft works? Feel free to stop by the garden shed in the herb garden to see our wool dyers at work at the museum!
