Tram - Depot Nederlands Openluchtmuseum, Arnhem

Tram depot

Once the museum had taken the decision to operate a historic tram, it became clear that a tram depot would also be required. It was not long before the idea was suggested of building a replica of Arnhem's old tram depot on the Westervoortsedijk. This had been built in 1911 and was probably designed by W.F.C. Schaap, the head of Arnhem's Public Works department.

Arnhem's depot was destroyed during the violence of the war in 1944. Unfortunately all the drawings were also lost at that time. This meant that the calculations for the new depot had to be worked out using photos. The photos were enlarged and the bricks counted. By measuring the dimensions of the bricks used for a transformer building from the same period as the depot, it was possible to determine the height, width and length fairly accurately. This was how the current tram depot came into being.
The version you will see at the museum is half as wide and a third of the length of the original depot. A workshop has been built next to it.
