Dovecote

In the Netherlands dovecotes were mostly found near castles and country houses, as the right to keep doves was restricted to the nobility. Doves were kept for consumption. Their droppings also made excellent manure for growing exotic crops such as melons and tobacco. After the 16th century, the right to keep doves was extended to (rich) farmers and commoners.

This dovecote with its pyramid-shaped roof was built and positioned with the help of contributions made by Arnhem evacuees who took refuge in the museum in the autumn of 1944.
