Brabant café

Part of this farmhouse has been set up as a café. Here you can sample the atmosphere of a 1910 farmhouse café from the south of the Netherlands.  You will also find a pall-mall court and an archery range, where you can try your hand at these old Dutch sports. Both of these facilities can be made available for group competitions on request.

In the early part of the 20th century, many farmers' wives in Brabant supplemented their income by running a living-room café in part of their farmhouse. In this particular farmhouse, the café was run by Mrs Meeuwsen-Kuijpers, who lived in the farmhouse with her large family at the beginning of the 20th century. Men mainly tended to go to the café on Saturday evenings and on Sundays after church, once the working week was behind them and they had received their weekly wages. Women and children were hardly ever seen, perhaps visiting the café once a year at the most when the fair was on.
