Little forest houseThe occupants of this simple cottage would have worked as labourers on large farms or in factories. Families were large - it was not uncommon for them to have as many as ten children. If there was no room at the table at meal times, anyone without a chair would sit or lie on the floor. The family slept in the living room, where there were four box beds, and in the attic. A goat could be kept in the small stall. In 1947, the period from which the interior originates, Klaas and Trijntje Wijnsma-van der Hoek lived here. They still had three children living at home, as well as two grandchildren. As there was no running water, the children would go off to fetch water from a well. Back to overview of buildings |
