Eel pedlar's shack

This hut would have been used by Volendam eel pedlars as a place to sleep. The hut has a box bed and a chimney. There was no furniture, so the pedlars would have simply sat on the floor. The occupants of the hut would have been elderly, often invalid, fishermen and boys who sold fish in Amsterdam. Until 1918, there were around thirty huts of this type on the banks of the river IJ. This was the year in which they were declared unfit for habitation. Back to overview of buildings
