Labourer's cottage

This labourer's cottage from the Zaan area belonged to the merchant who lived in the house next door (at the museum, you will find the merchant's house on the other side of the street). The cottage consists of just one room, with a box bed and a deep cupboard, and a small hall, which also served as a kitchen. This type of cottage was usually inhabited by older couples whose children no longer lived at home. The occupants would have had to pay one and a half guilders to the merchant in rent from their weekly income of five guilders.

Technical information
