Pall-mall court

Pall-mall is a centuries-old ball game that was once played across much of Europe. In the Dutch provinces of North Brabant and Limburg it was a popular sport until around 1920. A pall-mall court could be found at most inns and cafés. It would often be under cover so that people could continue playing even when it was wet. Pall-mall is played using balls weighing as much as five kilos. Two to four players compete against each other, the aim of the game being to hit the ball through the hoop from the front using a wooden mallet. The first player to reach a predetermined number of points is the winner. Back to overview of buildings
