Farmhouse
The farmer’s wife who welcomes you to this farmhouse is dressed in a set of smart clothes which she would have put on as soon as she had finished the morning’s dirty household chores. In her smarter dress, apron and pretty pleated bonnet she was all ready for a visit to the market, for example.
Many farm labourers were poor. They worked on the large farms in the area and lived in simple houses with a small patch of land. If they were lucky, they were able to work their way up and run their own farms. The first step towards this was to buy a few goats. Later they could add a few piglets or even a fatting calf. This is an example of this kind of small farmhouse. Arien van Essen, a farm labourer, lived in this small house around 1920. His hobby was poaching.
